Maine National Guard commander to retire

LEWISTON, Maine — The adjutant general of the Maine National Guard will be retiring at the end of the year.
Maj. Gen. John W. "Bill" Libby has led the Maine guard through six years of war.
Libby says he could have been forced to retire two months ago when he turned 66, but the Department of Defense gave him permission to continue.
Libby is a native of Lewiston.
Libby tells the Sun Journal of Lewiston that the National Guard is being relied on more now than at any time since World War II.
Over the last six years Libby has presided over good-bye ceremonies and traveled to combat theaters.
Six members of the Maine guard have died in service.
